9/15/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - The Orlando, Fla.-based Backstreet Boys and Miami-based singer Gloria Estefan are well aware of the danger a hurricane can pose. The Backstreet Boys, who were scheduled to perform at National Car Rental Center in Sunrise, Florida yesterday (Sept. 14) and tonight, have rescheduled those shows for Dec. 5-6, due to the threat of Hurricane Floyd.

All ticket holders are advised to hold on to their tickets, as they will be honored for the new dates. For persons interested, refunds will be given at the original place of purchase. Further information is available by calling the National Car Rental Center Box Office at (954) 835-8000.

Estefan has postponed a press conference planned for today in New York City due to the threat of Hurricane Floyd in Miami. Quepasa.com and Estefan were to announce a major community program and education initiative. Also to be announced were preliminary details of her upcoming 2000 U.S. Tour.

"I am deeply committed to my family and friends," said Estefan in a statement. "I can't leave my family and my home while Hurricane Floyd threatens our lives and everything we have worked so hard and so long to build." The press conference will be rescheduled at a future date.

Other concerts may be affected as well. As of press time, the Lynyrd Skynyrd/ ZZ Top concert scheduled to play the Orlando Arena on Friday (Sept. 17) was still on, although a representative for the venue noted that the storm's effects on the area over the next several days will certainly be a factor in any decisions made later in the week.

The publicist for ZZ Top was asked by LAUNCH if the show was in danger of being canceled, and he replied, "No. We're talking with the local promoter and monitoring the weather situation, but as of now the show is still on."

A spokesperson for Skynyrd tells LAUNCH, "As far as I know nothing is canceled and nobody will know anything until it's known where the hurricane will land."

Promoters for a Guess Who concert scheduled for Friday (Sept. 17) in Orlando's Church Street Market were unreachable at press time.
