BMG Entertainment - the $4.6 billion music and entertainment division of Bertelsmann AG and home to such powerhouse labels as RCA and Arista - has reached an all-time high in U.S. market share with 17.5% of current album sales. That means that BMG now holds the #2 rank here as of the close of the fiscal year, which ended June 30. BMG remained the #1 distributor of singles in the U.S. with 28.5% of that market and revenues of $4.6 billion.

"We continue to have great success with our labels, both in the U.S. and internationally," says BMG Chairman MICHAEL DORNEMANN. "As the industry continues to experience revolutionary changes, BMG has established itself as a voice that is heard throughout the world."

BMG had 25 artists/groups who sold in excess of one million units worldwide during the past 12 months. That pack of performers was lead by 'N SYNC, which has so far logged seven million albums sold and counting. Joining the red hot vocal group are superstars WHITNEY HOUSTON, The DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, TLC, SARAH McLACHLAN, MONICA, Country star ALAN JACKSON, EVE 6, R&B crooner TYRESE, Australian sensation NATALIE IMBRUGLIA, ALABAMA, 112 and others.

'N SYNC isn't the only "boy band" that played a part in BMG's fiscal '99 success. Via its strong relationship with Jive, BMG benefitted from the phenomenal success of The BACKSTREET BOYS, and was also able to capitalize on the breakthrough stardom of BRITNEY SPEARS, who just scored a huge week on her latest single, "(You Drive Me) Crazy," which is the lead track from the upcoming Fall feature film Drive Me Crazy. Also, BMG's Sonopress became one of the leading DVD duplicators in the business last year.
