Date: Jun 03, 2099 Backstreet Boys, Millennium (Jive) Category: Pop Rating - A (excellent) The best, smartest boy group ever? Possibly. The Backstreet Boys have done what few acts can do -- avoid backlash while getting huge. The five guys from Orlando, Fla., keep getting more accolades. Even the parents of Backstreet's fans love them. The new album, a pop tour de force that jumps, rocks and pops, will make the group that much more popular. 'Millennium' is not as juvenile as the last album sometimes was, yet younger fans won't be disappointed. The party starts with 'Larger Than Life', a rousing, volume-10 song that picks up where 'Backstreet's Back' left off. The single 'I Want It That Way' is signature Backstreet: midtempo, airy and with a little bump in the arrangement. Best of all is the improvement in the voices of the Boys, most apparent on ballads. For anybody wondering if the Boys get mature on this second album, check out the dreamy 'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely', which seems destined for the adult-contemporary charts. The Boys get the majority of its material from Max Martin, who with his recently deceased parter, Denniz PoP, built the Backstreet Boys sound. If this makes 'Millennium' the Backstreet Boys' swan song, they are going out with style. - Greg Simms Jr., Dayton Daily News
