Backstreet Boys' Millennium Breaks Sales Record in First Week With 1.134 Million Jive - 5/26/1999 at 14:07:57

The Backstreet Boys' second album Millennium has broken the record for first week of sales at an amazing number of 1.134 million according to Soundscan and will enter at number 1 on Billboard's Album 200 chart. Millennium was shipped to retail nearly 3X platinum in the U.S. and has a worldwide shipment of over 8 million. The previous record holder for first week over the counter sales was Garth Brooks with 1.085 million according to Soundscan. The Backstreet Boys' Millennium increased this record in sales by nearly 10% over Brooks' Double Live which was released November 17, 1998.

Millennium sold nearly 1 out of every 10 albums bought last week in the U.S., which demonstrates the group's wide demographic appeal and phenomenon status. The Backstreet Boys debut album, Backstreet Boys, is currently number 24 with a bullet on Billboard's 200 Album chart which is in the 93rd week on the charts.

The group's U.S. debut album, Backstreet Boys was recently rewarded the prestigious Diamond Award by the RIAA acknowledging sales of 10 million. The total worldwide sales of the Backstreet Boys is over 36 million albums in the last 3 years. Millennium debuted at number 1 in U.S., Canada, Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Mexico, Holland, Norway, Greece and Switzerland and has already reached platinum status in the U.S., Canada, Germany, India, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Australia, Belgium, Holland, Hong Kong, Korea, Italy, Japan, Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay, Malaysia, Spain, Mexico and Argentina.

The group's current single, "I Want It That Way" (an album cut which is not commercially available in the U.S.) is currently number 13 with a bullet on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. However, where the single is commercially available, it has reached number 1: UK, Holland, Canada, Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, and Pan Europe.

The Backstreet Boys are a 5 member R&B-Pop group which includes Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Howie Dorough. The group will begin their worldwide "Into The Millennium Tour," on June 2 in Ghent, Belgium and will begin the U.S. leg in mid-September.
