Backstreet Boys Sales at Musicland Point to Teen Power

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 25, 1999--A new millennium hit Musicland Stores Corporation (NYSE:MLG - news) last Tuesday, and with it came record first-day and first-week sales for a single album, driven by crowds of teenage shoppers.

The Backstreet Boys' ``Millennium,'' which debuted May 18, generated more single-album sales for both periods for Musicland's stores, beating the previous record set by Makaveli/2Pac's ``The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory'' in 1996. In its first six days ``Millennium'' sold more than 150,000 copies at Musicland's stores.

``The performance of the Backstreet Boys' release reflects the heavy shopping habits of the teen demographic, which will grow in numbers until 2010,'' said Gil Wachsman, vice chairman. ``Young people shopped at our stores in full force last week because they want a hot new release in their hands the same day it is available.''

``Millennium'' was released on the heels of Ricky Martin's self-titled album, which hit shelves on May 11. According to Wachsman, the strength of Backstreet Boys combined with that of Ricky Martin illustrates the vibrancy of music across many genres. ``It shows that teenagers not only are boosting pop music sales but also are helping Latin music, like hip-hop, cross over into the mainstream,'' said Wachsman.

Based in Minneapolis, Musicland Stores Corporation is the leading specialty retailer of home-entertainment software products in the United States. As of March 31, 1999, the company operated 1,327 retail stores in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands under the names Sam Goody, Suncoast Motion Picture Company, Media Play and On Cue.
