The latest news about the Backstreet Boys. They have a new record and an upcoming world tour. EW Online catches up with the Fab Five in New York City

by Elyssa Yoon-Jung Lee

''Everybody... Backstreet's back all right!'' crooned blond B-Boy Nick Carter between songs of his group's Broadway show last Tuesday night. The occasion? The chart-topping vocal group was filming an upcoming Disney Channel special -- ''Backstreet Boys in Concert,'' which will air July 10 -- in front of 1,800 fans. With their new album, ''Millennium,'' freshly in stores, the Boys are out to prove that their 1997 self-titled recording debut (which has sold more than 10 million copies) was no fluke.

Arguably the most harmonic team in all of boydom, BSB were their usual polished and synchronized selves in concert. Wearing blue-and-yellow futuristic football uniforms (and later changing into beige suits and hats), they performed four new songs, including the irresistible ''I Want It That Way'' and the power ballad ''Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely,'' along with several hits from their first album.

A major topic of discussion among the young girls in the audience (and their babysitting mothers) were the girlfriends of B-Boys Brian Littrell and Nick Carter, who sat in the choice side balconies looking like a pair of Britney Spears clones. ''I think she's really good for him,'' said one girl about Nick's squeeze, while others were less encouraging toward the group's budding loves: One particularly venomous group roared, ''We love you, Brian!'' throughout the 2-hour taping, alternating shouts to his girlfriend of ''Leigh Anne SUCKS!'' So much for sugar 'n' spice. Speaking for the older generation, one mother explained, ''As a teenager, I would have loved Nick. But, as a woman, I love Kevin. He's a MAN.'' ''Yeah,'' agreed her toe-tapping pal, ''tall, dark and handsome.''

To the mothers' (and daughters') delight, BSB concluded with their new ''The Perfect Fan,'' which was cowritten by Brian as an homage to moms everywhere, a la Boyz II Men's ''A Song for Mama.'' Replete with violins, cellos, and the 35-member Boys Choir of Harlem singing backup, the extravaganza was a fitting end to what, for many in the audience, had been a family affair.

To see more of the Backstreet Boys in the coming days, tune into ''Total Request Live'' on Tuesday (5/18), ''The Rosie O'Donnell Show'' on Thursday (5/20), and ''The Tonight Show'' next Monday. The group's European tour begins June 2 in Gent, Belgium, with American dates (still to be announced) to follow in September. Backstreet's back, alright -- with a vengeance.
