BACKSTREET BOYS Celebrate Re-Launch of Official Website backstreetboys.com and DEBUT of Online Store backstreetboysdirect.com on the ARTISTdirect Network

BACKSTREET BOYS Direct Virtual Fan Conference to be held May 17, 1999 at 1:00 PM (ET)

LOS ANGELES, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The BACKSTREET BOYS and their management company THE FIRM announce the May 17 re-launch of the official BACKSTREET BOYS website (backstreetboys.com) and the debut of the official BACKSTREET BOYS online store (backstreetboysdirect.com). In celebration of both sites, the BACKSTREET BOYS -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean and Kevin Richardson -- will participate in a virtual fan conference to be held at Studio 54 in NYC at 1:00 PM EST. The event, which enables fans from around the world to ask and have their questions answered directly by the band, will be broadcast online (I'll post the address when I get it). Fans will be able to interact directly with the BACKSTREET BOYS during this extraordinary event which will be hosted by Caitlin, a 13-year-old BACKSTREET BOYS fan from Ottawa, Canada. Caitlin -- webmaster of backstreet.net, the biggest BACKSTREET BOYS fan site in existence -- is the winner of a contest that was open to webmasters of BACKSTREET BOYS sites. More than 1,000 BACKSTREET BOYS fans entered the contest to be chosen as the ``#1 BACKSTREET BOYS fan'' and host this conference, which was coordinated by ARTISTdirect.com -- the web's portal to music news, artists and merchandise.

The redesign of backstreetboys.com will serve as the only official source for up-to-the-minute news and information about the BACKSTREET BOYS, alongside new photos and video clips. For the first time, fans will be able to get closer to the BACKSTREET BOYS through direct contact with the band via their web site. Meanwhile, the unique, dedicated, online store -- which is part of the comprehensive ARTISTdirect.com network -- will feature exclusive merchandise from the band available only on their web site.

``We're excited to offer our fans an official dedicated web site where we can be in more direct contact,'' stated the BACKSTREET BOYS. ``We want to be able to thank our fans for their support and, at the same time, offer them access to unusual items they may want to have.''

The re-launch of the official BACKSTREET BOYS website and the debut of the online store are only part of the anticipation surrounding the group's forthcoming album, MILLENNIUM, due out May 18 on Jive Records. MILLENNIUM is the follow-up to the BACKSTREET BOYS' self-titled U.S. debut album, which just received the prestigious Diamond Award from the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.), signifying sales of over 10 million in the U.S. alone. The album has already spent 85 weeks on Billboard's ``Top 200 Albums'' chart. ``With MILLENNIUM, we wanted to challenge ourselves,'' says the group's Howie Dorough. ``We actually recorded over 18 songs and chose the best.'' Four of MILLENNIUM's songs were co-written by the group: ``Larger Than Life,'' ``The One,'' ``Back To Your Heart'' and ``The Perfect Fan.''

BACKSTREET BOYS have already made history with the April 12 release of ``I Want It That Way,'' the first single from MILLENNIUM. In its first day at radio, the song generated 164 adds in the CHR (Top 40) and Rhythm Crossover formats, according to the record trade publication Radio & Records. This sets a new record for the trade. ``I Want It That Way'' also set a record at the Friday Morning Quarterback record trade publication by generating 167 adds in the CHR/Pop and Rhythmic formats the first day. Meanwhile, the Wayne Isham-lensed video for the song was recently shot at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

``We are thrilled to have the BACKSTREET BOYS join the ARTISTdirect.com network,'' stated ARTISTdirect co-founder Marc Geiger. ``The BACKSTREET BOYS are a very important addition to the ARTISTdirect network. This association will enable Nick, Brian, A.J., Howie and Kevin to be in closer contact with their fans. And fans will have the chance to buy unique items designed for the BACKSTREET BOYS and offered only on the group's site.''
