Date: May 13, 2099 By DAN AQUILANTE HARMONIES soared and hormones roared as the Backstreet Boys played a special after-school concert yesterday at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The show, which was taped for Broadcast on the Disney Channel, featured the Orlando-based quintet in an hour-long greatest hits program. During the show, the boys mugged for the 1,800 fans, sang well and danced in rebel-without-a-pause synchronized arrangements. Their vocals - definitely live - were well-rehearsed and practically flawless. Same went for the dance numbers in which the guys fancy-flipped fedoras in one piece and later made moves on folding chairs. Except in a couple of instances - where slight, hardly noticeable missteps were made - the boys hardly had to perform any second take "do-overs" for the TV filming. Yet there were no complaints from their adoring fans who would have welcomed hearing all of the songs a second time. The tunes that made the young women in love squeal at deafening decibels were dance-beat numbers such as "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," and the slow-paced love ballads. Of the Backstreet oldies "I'll Never Break Your Heart," from their debut disc was the song with the tightest vocal arrangements and the one that made the biggest aural impact on the audience. Since the band isn't scheduled to play Skyscraper Park in a true concert until late summer the boys took this show as an opportunity to road test songs from their latest disc, "Millennium," which is due out Tuesday. The best of those fresh-out-of-the-box tunes was the slow-burn ballad, "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely." Because this was a TV taping, there was a distinct lack of concert continuity and the usual feeling of building power, yet the BSB made up for that with very passionate delivery during the course of the performance. It is set to air on July 10.
