The second performance (I think) was the Backstreet Boys. After Brandy
(the co-host) had introduced them, a giant screen displayed them. it
looked like a scene from a concert, with all the boys sitting on high
stools. They were singing "All I Have To Give". This was the part that
was pre-recorded, shown on the screen. If you watched it on TV it
almost looked like it was live since they focussed in on the screen,
except for the very beginning when they showed the stage and the screen
and you could see that no one was on it. Anyways, they were singing, or
more accurately lip-syncing. You could tell that it was the track from
their cd playing and they were just mouthing along, i guess it was
dubbed in later. Anyways, they didn't actually sing the entire song.
Nick sang his first solo part, and Brian sang his first solo. While
they were singing the chorus, a girl runs onto the stage and attacks
Brian. One of their bodyguards/security carries her off the stage,
while she is kicking and screaming. After the chorus, they are about to
go into the next verses when they spot a giant crowd of fans coming
towards them. They all start running they other way. By the way, this
is still on the giant screen. You see them run through hallways and
backstage, closely followed by a giant crowd of girls. They all run up
the stairs. Then, while going down another hallway, Nick, A.J. and
Kevin go through a door that leads to the roof of the building. Howie
goes to a different door, and Brian runs down the hallway. Then you see
Nick, A.J. and Kevin again. They're standing on top of the roof, and
start to go one way, but then they realize that they're surrounded on
three sides. Their only way to escape is by jumping off of the
building, which they do after a bit of hesitation.
When they jump,
that's when the real Nick A.J. and Kevin come onto the stage from above,
supported by strings. Brian and Howie also appear on stage. That's
when they sing Everybody (Backstreet's Back). However, in my opinion,
this was a very poor performance. Don't get me wrong, it had actually
nothing to do with their singing, which was pretty good for a live show.
It was because of the background music. It wasn't the same as the
background track you hear on the cd or the one they usually sing and
dance to. Instead of the distinctive bass beat, they are backed up by a
squeaky club-dance type of beat. You might think that the background
music doesn't make that much of a difference, but if you saw this you
would know. The background music serves to enhance, compliment, or even
create the main melody of the song. However, this club-dance beat was
monotonous because it remained constant throughout the song, and it was
distracting, and annoying. As for the dancing, theyir routine was a
variation of what they normally do. They normal dance routine is
definitely better. They were backed up by a whole bunch of female
dancers wearing minimal clothing, I guess you could call it. There were
a whole bunch of strobe lights flashing, solo it was kind of
distracting. At the end of their performance, all the dancers jump on
top of all the boys, imitating fans. That was the theme of their
appearance, fans, which is what the American Music Awards is all about.
All in all, I thought that it was a pretty good appearance. Although
the performance wasn't as good as usual, it was not at the fault of the
singers, but because of the choice of background track accompanying it.
The beginning was really creative and well done, with the fans chasing
them and the boys coming down onto the stage.

The AMA's are one of the most boring award shows out there. The
only thing that made that show interesting was BSB. Their performance
was superb! If you notice everytime they appear on an award show their
performances just get better and better each time they perform. The
performance started out like they were in concert performing "All I Have
To Give", then all of a sudden girls began to storm the stage making the
guys run through a building onto a roof and then jumping off only to
then land on the AMA's stage to perform "Everybody". The song sounded
completely different then the original version, it had a more funkier
sound and bass to it. The dance routine was totally changed making it
even more smoother than the original. They were all dressed in black, but
each had their own style.
The audience p*ssed me off so bad because to me
they really didn't get into the performance. A.J.'s voice was stronger
then ever before even with the new dance routine which was more harder
than the original routine. It ended with all the girl dancers falling
onto them in the middle of the stage. It was great. The only low point of
their appearance on the show was them not receiving any of the awards, you
can tell in the audience when they showed their faces that they were
disappointed, but the AMA's have favorites and you can plainly see that
when Will Smith and Celine Dion won everything that they were nominated
for. And I still don't see how 'N SYNC won for BEST NEW ARTIST over
Lauryn Hill, someone please explain that to me, their album didn't even
reach NO.1 on the billboard charts, but, like I said AMA's have their
favorites.

When I tuned in to the American Music Awards on Monday night, I was
expecting a awesome performance by the BSB and at least one award for my
favorite group. I got none of that.
The performance that the BSB gave seriously disappointed me for obvious
reasons. For one, the whole thing looked like one big orgy. The girls were
barely clothed, certain dance moves were VERY explicit, and I didn't find
it nessecary for the girls to have their butts in the guy's faces. Although
I did find humor in Nick running face first into a tree, and Kevin being
stuck in his harness until the chorus, the rest of the performance was
seriously messed up. Brian seriously suprised me, and I'm sure he suprised
the rest of the BSB fans around the world when he grabbed that dancers
butt. If Brian is trying to promote a "bad boy" image, it isn't really
working. I think that this whole performance was a result of their new
management. What did we expect when the Boys joined up with the managers of
groups such as Korn and Limp Bizkit?
I was reading other reviews of the performance, and noticed somebody's
comment on the background music. If any of you had bought the Everybody
(Backstreet's Back) CD Single, you would notice that the music that was
played was the music from "Matty's Radio Remix" which was the second track
on the CD. I didn't really have any complaint about the music except for
the fact that the live part of the performance was relitively short.
Although the new choreography seemed complicated and added what was
lacking in the performance, the old choreography, in my opinion, was a step
above the new moves.
The camera man was defnintely high on speed as someone has said before.
Either that or he was being chased by a rabid 'N Syncer.
During certain shots, I could tell the audience as a whole did not enjoy
the performance. Either that or they were seriously shocked by the vulgar
dancing. When AJ sang "Now throw your hands up..." the camera cut to a shot
of the audience. There were about 5 people who were actually waving their
hands, two people who were clapping, and the rest of the people sat there
like stones. Even the people in the front row just stared at AJ with out
any form of expression on their faces.
The only reason I still watch the performance that I taped Monday is
because of Brian's version of the line "am I everything you need you'd
better rock your body right now." (Aka- Bri's Phat Line)
My very last comment about this disappointing performance, is- What did
Brian's girlfriend think?
