Date: Nov 18, 2000 Source: WorldPop Submitted By: Hani The Backstreet Boys' third/fourth album (depending on where you live) is a diverse mixture of syncopated upbeats, smooth R&B and classic Backstreet ballads. And, perhaps surprisingly the self-penned tracks are by far the best. The Call kicks things off with a bang. The Destiny's Child feel gives it a punchy dramatic sound and it is one of the many songs on this album about forgiveness from a girlfriend after an affair. Not For Me and the surprisingly country I Promise You follow on this theme, but not as well. There's a new R&B sound which is sophisticated and suits them well although songs like Yes I Will are a bit schmaltzy and in this case won't help AJ's bad boy image! The variety continues with the promised latin track More Than That, but think Enrique's ballads rather then Ricky's Vida Loca, which is no bad thing. But a BSB album would not be complete without their 'Thanking the fans' song. This time its Everyone, with a Britney-esque sound it comes into its own with a rather strange circus style breakdown in the middle! The Backstreet Boys are at their best though when they unleash some classic pop, and the two best tracks are penned by the group themselves. Howie's What Makes You Different is sentimental but the boys sound fab, and The Answer To Our Life, slightly reminiscent of The One, reminds us of what separates them from their rivals.
