Date: Aug 31, 2000 *This interview is entirely different from the JoJo interview* Kevin was the surprise in-studio "Celebrity Guest" on DJ Valentine's show on KIIS FM 102.7, Tuesday August 29. Valentine beforehand gave out the hint "Whopper" as to who his "Celebrity Guest" was yesterday) Kevin ~ What's up?!? [Applause and cheering in the background] Valentine ~ Give it up! How are you, brother? Looking good! Kevin ~ I'm good, how you doin'? Valentine ~ Now, I can't even remember the last time we saw each other. 'Cause the first time we met, I'll bring you back years ago at a radio station in Dallas,Texas … and if you remember correctly this is very funny, and I wish I had the tape laying around here somewhere we did a song ... "No Panties Thursday" Kevin ~ Oh yeah, okay, yeah! Valentine ~ D'you remember that? Remember how it went? "No panties Thursday, got it Come on now everybody" [To the tune of "WGIGO"] Kevin ~ And then I, I came in a little ad lib, and was kinda off beat- Valentine ~ No NO it was perfect, it was perfect Kevin ~ -and the fellas were raggin' on me, they, they called me no rhythm after that, so- Valentine ~ They did not, did they? I caused that kind of controversy in your life? Kevin ~ It's all good though [laughing] Valentine ~ How does it feel to be you right now? ‘Cause you’re a married now so that’s changed real fast for ya! Kevin ~ It’s changed, yeah. Valentine ~ How’d that marriage work out? Kevin ~ It’s great! It’s great! Valentine ~ Yeah? Kevin ~ Ummm, we’ve been dating on and off for eight years now so, uh, it was just kind of, uh, another chapter in my life. Valentine ~ How did you meet her? Kevin ~ I met at Walt Disney World in the cafeteria Valentine ~ What, was she just ordering food and you saw her? Kevin ~ She was sittin’ down with some friends and, uh, a buddy a mine came up to me and said ‘You need to ‘inerduce yourself to her’ so, evidently she’d been kinda checkin’ me out- Valentine ~ Yeah??? Kevin ~ So he kinda gave me the green light ‘cause I’m, I was a shy type a guy, can’t just go up and - Valentine ~ Right! Kevin ~ ask ladies out so I went and introduced myself and later on, a couple days later I asked her for her number and asked her if she was interested in goin’ out and that was eight years ago! Valentine ~ And it worked! Kevin ~ I mean, we’ve had our ups and downs- Valentine ~ Amen brother! Who hasn’t? Kevin ~ We’ve broken up on and off, with the traveling and stuff. Valentine ~ All the good relationships though, tell me if you think this, all the good relationships have their ups and downs- Kevin ~ Mmm… Valentine ~ ‘Cause the passion is so great, it’s so negative its so happy is so down, everything, the sad the happiness. That’s what makes the relationship so incredible, that passion when you come together. I’ve been married for two years… I’ve been married now for two and a half years. Kevin ~ Congradulations! Valentine ~ So uh, let me tell ya something about marriage. Kevin ~ Alright Valentine ~ Let me tell you this, just between me and you, just a little bit- Kevin ~ Uh-oh! [Both of them now take a serious, yet sarcastic tone of voice :p] Valentine ~ I got this book, right- Kevin ~ Uh huh Valentine ~ A Hundred and One Great Nights of Sex Kevin ~ Uh huh Valentine ~ The way it works, you go back and forth each night, right? You get, like, page one is what the guy does for her. Page two is what she does for me- Kevin ~ ‘Kay Valentine ~ We got this about two years ago… We’re still on page two. Kevin ~ Oooh! Valentine ~ Yeah. Kevin ~ Wow- Valentine ~ I’m bummin’! Kevin ~ You’re bummin’! Valentine ~ [laughing] Kevin ~ You’re enjoying each page, though- Valentine ~ No NO! But we, I did the first page and she goes “Put that book away!” Kevin ~ [laughing] Valentine ~ What is THAT all about?!? Kevin ~ What’s up with that? Valentine ~ I don’t know man! Hey you wanna take some phone calls and stuff? Kevin ~ Sure! Valentine ~ We’ll take phone calls in a few minutes. Kevin Richardson in the studio from the Backstreet Boys. “Whopper” was that clue, yeah. We worked long and hard on that thing. Kevin ~ Right Valentine ~ Do you eat at Burger King all the time? Kevin ~ We, we eat fast food constantly when we’re on the road, Valentine ~ We love the Whoppers man! Those commercials are funny by the way. We gotta talk about this and, and the music that’s out now and any other stuff that’s coming up. You doing any acting, any acting stuff? Kevin ~ Umm, I’m plannin’ on doing some reading and stuff for- Valentine ~ You got that look today Kevin ~ Oh yeah? That look?!? Valentine ~ You got the look, brother! It’s KIIS FM! [After song] Valentine ~ 102.7 KIIS FM .You ready to go on the radio? Kevin ~ Oh yeah! [A little electronic twitch of noise] Valentine ~ What, what are you doing? You’re not ready, what are you doing, dude? Kevin ~ Sorry, man Valentine ~ Don’t slack! Kevin ~ Hey man, I came in here- Valentine ~ What?!? Kevin ~ to be your “Celebrity Guest” Valentine ~ I know, I know, but I- Kevin ~ and you’re treating me like a step child! So what’s up with that? Valentine ~ No! No! Kevin, I’m not treating you like a step child. I’m just saying that when you go on the radio you gotta have those headphones ready. Kevin ~ I’m ready! Valentine ~ I mean, I appreciate you signing the autographs for the youngsters- Kevin ~ Let’s go!!!! Valentine ~ What’s your deal? [laughter in the background] Valentine ~ What’s your deal? You got issues?!?! Kevin ~ Dude, I mean I can- Valentine ~ Did you come in here with issues or something? I can walk out! I got no problems walkin’ outta here- Kevin ~ Well you deceive the audience and play some record that’s not even our new record- Valentine ~ Oh, okay! Alright! See this is, yeah, this is … okay!- Kevin ~ and you, you what- Valentine ~ This is going back to last week when I played a world premiere of what I thought was going to be your next single which is about four weeks away. Yeah I may have played that wrong one- Kevin ~ And our real fans out there, they called ya up and they, they told ya … what’s up with that? Valentine ~ You wanna, you wanna just take phone calls? I’ll walk out? Is that what you want? Kevin ~ I think, I think I could probably handle it better than you could- Valentine ~ Uh, oh! You think you can do this better than I can? Kevin ~ I think so, yeah! Valentine ~ You know how many celebs have thought they could do my job better? Kevin ~ Well, I used to practice this at home when I was a little child Valentine ~ Oh ya did? Kevin ~ Oh yeah! Valentine ~ Well I used to practice, too! [He starts singing QPGWMH] Kevin ~ I used to fantasize about being a DJ Valentine ~ Did ya really? Kevin ~ Yeah I did! Valentine ~ Alright! I’m just gonna hit a phone line- Kevin ~ So just gimme a shot! Valentine ~ You’re on! Kevin ~ Cool!!! Uh, caller? [silence] Kevin ~ Hello? Valentine ~ …OH I have to press that button. SORRY- Kevin ~ There ya go! Hello caller? Valentine ~ Go ahead caller!- [silence] Valentine ~ [clears his throat] Well, I guess we’re doin’- [laughter in the background] Kevin ~ Ahh! You’re settin’ me up, aren’t you? You’re settin’ me up! Valentine ~ I’m NOT setting you up! I’m just, I’m just saying! Hello KIIS FM? Caller ~ Hello? Valentine ~ Alright, you’re on it Kevin. I’m leavin’ GOODBYE! Kevin ~ There ya go! Bye! Caller ~ Hi! Kevin ~ HEY! How ya doing? What’s your name? Caller ~ Hi, my name’s Alexandra! Kevin ~ Hi Alexandra! Alexandra ~ Umm, I have a question for you. Is, ‘cause I live in Wilmington sort of close by L.A.- Kevin ~ Uh-huh! Alexandra ~ And um, I wanna know, when is your, like, your, we’re, like, I’ve never, ever, like, met you or, or any of you guys and I just wanted to know when is the next, [laughs], next um concert you might have in L.A. or somewhere here? Kevin ~ Okay, our uh, [laughs] now be patient. Our next record, we’re gonna drop our single probably in October- Alexandra ~ Um-hmm Kevin ~ and the album in November. And then we’ll be on tour on at the first of the year in the United States, probably in February. So we’ll be swinging through Los Angeles around, uh, that time and we’re gonna be coming back here doing promotion, radio promotion, uh, before the record comes out. And uh, I guess we’ll stop by and see Valentine, if he’s cool… Alexandra ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ Whatever Kevin ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ Take another caller, here’s another one. Hey KIIS FM you’re on the radio with Kevin naa whatever- Kevin ~ [laughs] Caller ~ Hi!!! Kevin ~ Hey! Caller ~ This is Vanessa from Terrace(?) Kevin ~ Hey Vanessa! Vanessa ~ Kevin? Kevin ~ Yeah? Vanessa ~ I remember you guys had a, well actually you had a solo and you didn’t have lyrics for it yet? I was wonderin’ if, um, you found ‘em yet? Kevin ~ Oh, you’re talking about the song that I played on tour? Vanessa ~ Um ,well, I wasn’t able to make the tour because I couldn’t get tickets … but I, I believe so. You did a piano solo on it? Kevin ~ Yeah, yeah! The song I, that, that’s a song I actually wrote for my father- Vanessa ~ Um-hmm- Kevin ~ and I, uh, I think I’ve decided just to keep that an instrumental. Vanessa ~ Oh really? Kevin ~ Yeah Vanessa ~ Yeah, ‘cause I was thinkin’ about, um, trying to get lyrics to you [talking in the backround] Kevin ~ Who’s that back there? Vanessa ~ Oh that’s my little sister Kevin ~ Oh cool! HEY little sister- Vanessa ~ Her name is Creesa(?) … Um, but I was trying to get lyrics to you but I don’t know where exactly to send them or anything like that Keivn ~ Well, you can send them… to Valentine, right here at the radio station- Valentine ~ Oh that’s great, that’s nice, nice, nice- Kevin ~ Since me and him are big buddies now- Valentine ~ yeah, this is gonna be good, yeah- Kevin ~ he’s lettin’ me run the show- Valentine ~ uh-huh, this is gonna be good- Kevin ~ So uh- send the lyrics to Valentine- Valentine ~ yeah, send the lyrics to me, send ‘em away, send ‘em away- Kevin ~ and uh, AY, we can even have a contest! Valentine ~ Yeah we could! We’ll do that. We’ll have a little contest for lyrics, how ‘bout that? Kevin ~ Definitiely! That’d be cool, and Valentine will, will go through all the lyrics that come in- Valentine ~ Yeah, every single one of them, yeah!- Kevin ~ he’ll be my personal leazon(?)- Valentine ~ Yes, every single one of ‘em, yeah Kevin ~ and he’ll do that, for real! Valentine ~ Absolutely! Kevin ~ I, I mean, I’m willing to do that. Ya, you’re not willing to do that? Valentine ~ No, no it’s not an issue of willing or wanting again, but now you’re setting me up! You know, you’re putting me in this situation where I’m gonna have … You realize how impressive- Kevin ~ Send ALL your lyrics to Valentine Valentine ~ No, now that’s not necessary, that’s not necessary, no Kevin ~ ALL of ‘em! Valentine ~ You realize how big your band is, you realize how large you are across the country. Now what’s gonna happen here, here’s what’s gonna happen! You said “Send your lyrics to Valentine” Kevin ~ Yeah! Valentine ~ for Kevin, Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys. Kevin ~ Yeah! Valentine ~ Send your lyrics” That is now gonna be printed in Teen Beat magazine, Teen magazine. It’s gonna be on the internet by tomorrow, all around the world. Some little kid from Sweden’s gonna sending me lyrics I can’t read! And I’m gonna have all this mail coming here! Kevin ~ It’s gonna be great! Valentine ~ Ohh the great part about that is actually, you know what, ladies usually enclose pictures of themselves in there too, don’t they? Kevin ~ Right Valentine ~ Alright, Kevin Richardson’s in the studio, great idea! [commercial] Kevin ~ [didn’t catch this part but was talking about music and playing the keys] Valentine ~ …Stop it! I could dance I could find middle C Kevin ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ I could do that! There’s a rumor going around of course that you guys were breaking up for awhile. Not true, right? Kevin ~ Not true Valentine ~ Where do these things get started? People just put ‘em up there on the internet?- Kevin ~ Probably, probably ‘cause A.J., uh, is doin’ some stuff for VH1’s Save The Music- Valentine ~ Right- Kevin ~ and Howie and I have been reading for films and stuff, and and Brian’s been doin’ some producing and I mean, we allow each other, we give each other space- Valentine ~ the freedom- Kevin ~ to do things, and freedom to,to grow in other ways and that’s a good thing, that’s not a bad thing, so- Valentine ~ Now, there’s gonna come a time, obviously years down the road that you guys probably won’t be together … but you think those friendships will always gonna last? Kevin ~ Always Valentine ~ Yeah? Kevin ~ Yeah, I do Valentine ~ What’s the one thing you’ve learned being in the band? Something you’ve learned about life or about yourself that you can share Kevin ~ Umm, … probably that, uh, you might think that your way is the only way and the best way- Valentine ~ Right- Kevin ~ but, uh, you should stop and listen, like when you’re on a team or when, you know, you should listen to your teammates or your friends or- Valentine ~ Right- Kevin ~ whatever! And, uh, between the five of us, we may not always agree but we always come out with a solution that works Valentine ~ There’s also another rumor goin’ around that, um, your record rep. told me, I’m not say her name. I don’t wanna get her in trouble Kevin ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ … That you actually taught ballroom dancing for a while- Kevin ~ Oh yeah Valentine ~ back in Florida. Is this true? Kevin ~ I taught, uh, yeah, like cha-cha, merengue, samba, hustle, waltz- Valentine ~ Okay- Kevin ~ all that stuff back in Orlando back in ’91. Can’t remember much of it though, uh- Valentine ~ Well, see, that’s okay! Because right now live on the internet, we have that camera hooked up, KIISFM. com , [spelling it out] K-I-I-S-FM.com Kevin ~ Uh-huh Valentine ~ and what I’m gonna do, I’m gonna turn that music down right there Kevin ~ Mm-hmm Valentine ~ I’m gonna walk around to your side and I’m gonna teach you a dance Kevin ~ Oh really, okay! Valentine ~ No, I’m Irish by the way- Kevin ~ Okay, your gonna teach me the- [Irish jig type music comes on] Kevin ~ OH! Okay, the Kloghopper song! Valentine ~ So uh, I’m comin’ over … alright, now a little dancing lesson here, you ready? Here we go! So, try a little something like this, try this right here … [his feet shuffling and dancing] Kevin ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ Try that. Try it, dude!!! Come on! Kevin ~ [laughs] Valentine ~ You can do it! Kevin ~ [laughs] … One more time, do it one more time- [his feet shuffling and dancing] [laughter in the background] Kevin ~ See, I, I knew he was just makin’ this up- Valentine ~ I am NOT makin’ it up!!! Kevin ~ He did it differently twice- Valentine ~ I’m a genious!!! Kevin ~ Alright here we go … Valentine ~ Do it! [now Kevin dancing] [cheering and laughter in the background] Valentine ~ YES, ladies and gentlemen! How ‘bout that! Kevin Richardson doin’ a little Irish step dancing! Oh, [applauding] OH!- Kevin ~ [in a overly done Irish accent :)] I’m Irish!!! I’m IRISH!!! Valentine ~ You are, man! Kevin ~ It’s a leprechaun! Valentine ~ It’s ‘is, you like ‘is Luck Charms, boy Kevin ~ I do! Valentine ~ OH, they’re great, aren’t they?!? Kevin ~ They’re great! Valentine ~ Hey man, thanks for comin’ by today Kevin ~ Alright, thank you! Valentine ~ Okay so, the, uh, first record, that little sneak release thing is comin’ out ‘bout four weeks from now? Kevin ~ Yep Valentine ~ When’s the album due out? Kevin ~ Album’s due out, uh, [in a deep voice] November Valentine ~ [also in a deep voice] November. Kevin ~ NOVEMBER!
