Dec. 5 - There are several ways that House of Blues Concerts has boosted revenue on prime tickets without putting them on sale at Ticketmaster outlets. All apparently are legal, but little known to the general public:
- Contract tickets: Over the years, House of Blues has had several priority seating programs for season-ticket holders, labeled "Hot Seats,'' "Premier Seat Location,'' and the current "Marquee Club.'' The programs generally charge a one-time up-front fee, and then participants get to buy prime seats at the regular price before those seats are available to the public.
While those programs are advertised, sources say there's another, unadvertised program. Under this program, 65 seats in the pit and front sections at Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre concerts have been sold under contract to brokers like Frank Graziano, who was House of Blues' largest individual client last year.
"They (brokers) get first right of refusal for all the tickets, then they're also allowed to order more, and they go at a higher price,'' a former House of Blues employee told The Denver Post.
- House tickets: These are available through the House of Blues office for VIPs and business clients.
"Breaking down the charges, it's the price of the ticket plus the Ticketmaster fee plus the "house fee' - they bump (the list price) by $10 to $15,'' said Lisa Bullock, former House of Blues ticketing manager. "None of that went to Ticketmaster - that's just (House of Blues) pocket money.''
- Party tickets: Under advertised programs, from $75 to $100 is tacked onto the ticket price, in exchange for which a buyer gets a guaranteed prime seat plus an invitation to a pre- or post-show party. Anywhere from $10 to $25 per ticket is put toward the promoter's bottom line.
In addition to these sales programs, some tickets are taken off the market for promotional purposes.
