Date: Oct 18, 2099 Source: tammie Submitted By: Tammie: O.K., at first I was going to resist doing a review on the album, MTV video music awards, and the “Larger Than Life” video, but my roommate and I decided we needed to get our feelings out now before we go to the Iowa City concert. After the concert, we’ll probably be too hyper to actually sit down and write a review. Jeanne: Iowa City-yea! There are some things I just gotta say. As I was reading other reviews, some things I just didn’t agree with. I really wasn’t a Backstreet Boys fan until I got a new roommate this year (we’re sophomores in college), now I am definitely a fan. LARGER THAN LIFE Tammie: I am not ashamed to admit that the first time I played the CD and heard this song, I hated it. It even made me hate the whole CD. It took me two days to play the CD a second time, but during those two days, “Larger Than Life” was the only song that stuck in my mind. This is the same thing that happened with “Everybody”, but I ended up loving it. What can I say, the Backstreet Boys are the kings of the suck-you-in songs. Now I love “Larger Than Life,” especially A.J.’s screams and the start of Nick’s verse (the video version with the music change!). Jeanne: I have to admit that this song grew on me, cause I didn’t like it when I first heard it either. Don’t get me wrong, the beat is catchy, but the lyrics were just not hitting me. Now every time I hear this song, I have to get up and dance--that’s all I have to say about that. I WANT IT THAT WAY Tammie: Well, when talking about this song, I have to admit that I am a little ashamed. The first time I heard this song on the radio, I couldn’t figure out whose song it was (I actually came in on Kevin singing!). I knew I recognized the song (computer downloads), but it just took me until the chorus to actually remember from where. Personally I like the jazz remix better, and I like the lyrics to the other version better (that’s the one I was listening to that I didn’t recognize). It’s a decent song, but there could have been a little more depth to the song. Now, I just have to talk about something I saw on MTV--the girls performing a video to this song. I’m not trying to be mean, but that was the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. What was the girl doing that was doing A.J.’s parts? He may do some hand movements in the video, but at least he makes them look cool, but what can I say, I got some entertainment out of the video! Jeanne: Before I comment on the actual song, I have to add a little comment about those girls too. At first I thought it was hilarious; it looked like something me and my stupid friends would do, but then I found out that they actually added credits to it--what were they thinking! Anyway, back to the song...I really like it, and if it were up to me, I would have combined the lyrics from the first version with the final version. SHOW ME THE MEANING OF BEING LONELY Tammie: The two things I like about this song are the chorus, and the fact that the Backstreet Boys aren’t singing another “happy” song. Other than that, I think this song is my least favorite on the album...note the fact that I don’t have a lot to say about it. Jeanne: I actually like this song. 1 because, as noted above, it’s not a “happy” song, but the lyrics are deep. DON’T WANNA LOSE YOU NOW Tammie: Once again, this is not one of my favorite songs. I do like the lyrics to this song, but it’s just something about the song that just doesn’t catch me...I don’t know, but at least I’m not dwelling on it. Jeanne: This is not one of my favorite songs either. I didn’t find too much to like except the beat, but it doesn’t totally suck. IT’S GOTTA BE YOU Tammie: Let me just start off by saying that this song is on hit (that’s pronounced like own-- own hit--if you don’t say it right you don’t get the proper effect :-) )from the first line of the song, and then when the beat kicks in...I go crazy...man...just can’t wait to hear this one in concert. I’m more of a ballad person, but I can really, really, really make an exception for this song! Jeanne: I like the song too. The lyrics, once again, are not the best, but that’s my party song, and I have to dance to it. That beat should be in every mix of a song. I NEED YOU TONIGHT Tammie: Oh my gosh!!! First I have to say that Nick almost killed me singing this on the Homecoming video. I tried my hardest to hold those notes with him, and I almost passed out. Man does he have some lungs! I just wish he had put more feeling into the album version. I have to admit that I’m not too fond of hearing nick sing (except on “If You Want It To Be Good Girl (Get Yourself A Bad Boy)--how old was he?-- and “You Wrote The Book On Love”--please see comments at end), but I can’t imagine anyone else singing this song! When I heard the sample for it on the “All I Have To Give” single, I just kept playing the clip over! Even though I’d rather hear A.J. do a solo, I think Nick deserved to be alone on this one! Jeanne: Man this song is so good! I have to agree with Tammie; I didn’t even know that he could sing without whining (yes, Tammie thinks he whines too much), but even when he whines on this song, he sounds soooo good, especially on the Homecoming video. DON’T WANT YOU BACK Tammie: What! Our guys let out a little aggression! I love this song. I just like the pounding music, and once again it was good to not hear them talking about I want you back, and I’ll never break your heart. I also like the fact that this song is as far away that they’ve been from what OTHER people consider bubble gum pop (stupid name). It has a nice rock edge to it (another reason I also like LTL). Jeanne: Man I love this song too. Talk about harsh, first the lyrics, then they pound it in with the music...every time...you’ll never break my heart--oops! I think you did! THE ONE Tammie: Man...another one of those suck-you-in songs, so you know what that means! I hated the song at first, but it just eventually grabbed me. More pounding music--can’t help but dance! Man...I think if they flipped and put out a heavy metal album, I would even like that (O.K., I’m lying--not even BSB could make me listen...I love them, but we would have to go our ways). Jeanne: I still don’t really like this song, but as my roommate keeps pointing out, it’s hard not to be pulled into their songs. It’s O.K. now, but definitely not my favorite. BACK TO YOUR HEART Tammie: Kevin, Kevin, Kevin! This is my favorite song on the album, and it’s one of my favorite songs from anyone. I think Kevin did so good on this song, he should really write more. The lyrics are beautiful, and the vocal arrangement just really grabs me. I love the way that Brian takes over the song (yes I mean that in a good way). I have to say that Kevin is a bigger person than I would be. Considering that he never really gets to lead, I would have been like “it’s my song, and I’m going to have a lead”. As much as I love to hear Kevin sing...I wouldn’t change this song for anything. I really love the vocal arrangement at the end of the song where there are like two choruses and two leads going on (if anyone can tell me what’s being said in the background after “these arms of mine are open wide from now until the end of time...” please e-mail me!!). Jeanne: This is my favorite song on this album too. The lyrics are like WOW! Man, they’re deep. Also, I must admit, I liked Kevin singing, but I also think the song is best like it is. SPANISH EYES Tammie: I think this is a pretty song. I really like hearing Brian sing on this song. It’s really the music that makes this song pretty (and Brian’s voice), but there is also something about these lyrics that bothers me some...but I just can’t put my finger on it. Jeanne: This is a cool song too. Did I mention that I was born in Madrid (O.K., I just wish). I think it’s very pretty. I like the lyrics, and the melody is nice. NO ONE ELSE COMES CLOSE Tammie: This is my second favorite song on the album! Like I said, I’m a ballad person. Beautiful music and beautiful lyrics. I also forgot that this is anther song that I actually like to hear Nick sing on (he actually has my favorite part), so that makes the song a little better too. Jeanne: This is a beautiful song. I agree with Tammie--I didn’t even know that was Nick singing at first (Tammie did), and his verse is the best. THE PERFECT FAN Tammie: Forget Boyz II Men... the Backstreet Boys have the best mom song. I like this song because it reminds me of a church song, and I can’t believe that Kevin actually got the best verse! I just think his part adds the most power to the song (why oh why didn’t they let him sing on the last album!!!). The reason I like this song isn’t because it’s a tribute to mothers...it’s just a pretty song...even without the sappy stuff :-) . Jeanne: O.K. this did remind me of the Boyz II Men song too, and all though I like that song too, this one had a little extra--namely the choir. This is a really pretty song. Someday I ‘m going to sing it to my mom (Tammie: better then her singing it to me). Tammie: Overall, I give Millennium a 4 out of 5. It’s the best album of the year, but they lost a point because I know they can do better. First of all, “You Wrote The Book On Love” should have been the first song they put on the album (I don’t appreciate the fact that it’s on some of the export versions). That song is my favorite Backsteet song--it’s actually my favorite song period, and I download it on my computer every night. I also think that they should have put “If You Stay” on this album. I’m still waiting for them to get a #1 single. I also think that they should stop depending so much on “pop” writers like Max Martin, and they should do more writing (especially Kevin). I also just have to comment on the video music awards performance and the LTL video (I know I’m late). First of all, can someone please tell what was wrong with Nick’s eyebrows on MTV (I swear he didn’t have any), and as far as A.J.’s shirt on MTV and in the video--I think it looked like a woman’s shirt, but I think he worked it. He did say that he likes to wear things that nobody else would be caught dead in. I think he has style--even if it may not always seem good, but that’s why I like him so much: he’s still bold enough to do it! As far as the dancers go, I think there were too many people on that little stage at the awards, but they are good. I think ‘N Sync and Britney Spears routines were tighter, but considering that the BSB were doing a routine to a song that borders on rock, they get extra points (for singing too). Also, ‘N Sync and Britney didn’t get the crowd going like the guys--as soon as they opened their mouths, the crowd started singing along, and even the guys in the audience were feelin LTL! Well, that’s all I have to say for now...I look forward to getting hate mail from people for saying I really don’t like Nick to sing, and for saying ‘N Sync’s routine was better, but that’ll just give me even more reason to come back! :-) Comment on this item.
