Date: Feb 02, 2006 Backstreet Boys become men Cameron Adams 03feb06 They may be 30-something men now, but the Backstreet Boys are back. And a rabid fan base at Rod Laver Arena last night partied like it was 1999. The boys never toured Australia at the height of their fame. However, their comeback (tellingly after a few solo careers tanked) has worked best in Australia, so they've finally made the trip. Of course it's a different show from the huge pop spectacular they delivered in their heyday when they would fly above the audience. These days youngest boy Nick Carter is in his Fat Elvis stage, making any kind of elevation slightly dubious. Indeed there's more than a little irony watching a sweaty, bulky Carter belt out their hits Larger Than Life. Despite the years on the clock, the grown-up boys have an impressive arsenal of hits that have arguably aged better than they have: The Call, As Long As You Love Me, Shape of My Heart and the rousing Everybody (Backstreet's Back). While the Melbourne show was the last one of their second-wind world tour, the ear-splitting screams and obvious devotion proved their loyal fans have long memories.
