Date: Sep 07, 2004 Thu Aug 5,12:28 AM ET Michael Schneider, STAFF As it prepares a comeback tour next summer for the Backstreet Boys (news - web sites), Wright-Crear Management (which reps the pop group) is developing a reality contest to choose the group's highly paid protector. Wright-Crear recruited reality producer Jonathan "J.T." Taylor ("The Osbournes," "Tough Enough") to run the show. The Backstreet Boys -- AJ Maclean, Kevin Richardson (news), Brian Littrell (news), Howie Dorough and Nick Carter (news) -- will be involved with the show and appear on camera, but the focus will be on the "American Idol" competish to find the right tough-as-nails man or woman to take on the key bodyguard position. "You get all kinds of crazy people who think that just because they're the baddest, the biggest, that they can be a bodyguard," Wright-Crear partner Kenneth Crear said. "But you've got to deal with so many different personalities, you're on top of people's lives ... it entails a lot."
Although the Backstreet Boys will play a secondary role in the show, "Bodyguard" will double as a strong promotional platform to launch the group's world tour. Final episode of "Bodyguard" will likely encompass the winner's first day on the job as the Backstreet Boys tour kicks off.
"This is a cool thing for the artist, another way to get their name and brand out there," Crear said. "And if the first season is successful, every year we can find a new artist and find a new bodyguard for their tour."
Crear said he and partner Johnny Wright picked Taylor to produce because "if you can deal with the Osbournes, you can deal with anyone. ... It's important for us to have someone with experience." All three will exec produce.
Crear, Wright and Taylor plan to pitch the project to networks later this month.
