- ![]() Date: Jul 04, 2002 This is from Ask Billboard. Hi, I can't help but notice that the Backstreet Boys recent hits album "Chapter 1" has not been certified platinum yet, even though I know it's sold well over 1 million copies. Why is this? And can you please tell me how much it has sold to date? Aaron Hello Aaron, The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certifies gold and platinum albums after reviewing data for the number of copies that have been shipped to U.S. retailers. While Billboard charts indicate what RIAA award a title has received, the magazine does not certify albums gold or platinum. A record label applies to the RIAA in order to have a title certified, and perhaps "The Hits - Chapter One," has slipped through the cracks at Jive. The album has sold 1.4 million units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, which measures over the counter sales, not shipments. Billboard's album charts, such as The Billboard 200 where "The Hits" debuted last November at No. 4, are based solely on data from Nielsen SoundScan.
