That's why Local 6 is dedicating the month of June to help raise awareness of this disease. Local 6 News featured Palm Bay teenager, Jullianne Trotter, 15, who is battling the chronic disease that affects joints, organs and muscles. Trotter's fight with the disease has caused her to gain and lose 35 pounds. She also lost her hair because of the medication to control lupus. "I take an average of 22 pills a day, sometimes more, sometimes less," Trotter said. Trotter is now working with Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough to help find a cure for the disease. Dorough lost his sister to the disease. Now Dorough and his other sister, Pollyanna, write and perform music to raise funds to beat lupus. "The hope is to find a cure for lupus so that no one else will have to suffer like my sister did," Pollyanna Dorough said. A benefit concert will be help June 22 at the Hard Rock Live.
