- ![]() Date: May 25, 2002 MTV Launches Video Music Awards In Japan LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - MTV today (May 24) kicked off its first Video Music Awards in Japan, where American singers such as Sheryl Crow, Boys II Men and Nickelback joined Japanese stars like Rip Slyme and Zeebra, reports the AP. Awards were presented in 15 categories, which ranged from hip hop and rap to dance. The winners were selected by MTV's Japanese viewers. Ayumi Hamazaki was one of the night's winners. A Japanese singer whose popularity has begun to spread throughout Asia, Hamazaki received the top female award. "I was really nervous," says Hamazaki. "I'm just happy to be here." The American boy band the Backstreet Boys were chosen as the best group of the year, but were not on hand at the Tokyo ceremony to collect their award. The Japanese band Chemistry won the top pop honors, while the British rock group Oasis won for best live performance. The Japanese group Rip Slyme opened the show performing in men's kimonos and went on to win the award for best hip hop or rap.
