Mint Jubilee bash was like a Hollywood party -- only more fun

Melissa Joan Hart of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" interviewed a TV-crew member at the Mint Jubilee.

Rachael Leigh Cook is all that as she stands by the bar and intimately, seemingly absent-mindedly, strokes the hand of Kip Pardue -- her date to the Mint Jubilee and her co-star in the upcoming movie "American Crime."

Joseph Reitman, a self-proclaimed "silent auction junkie" who had a part in "The Perfect Storm," is pontificating on the ethics of selling a box of cigars among items being auctioned at a fund-raiser to fight cancer.

"It's like auctioning off a gun at an anti-crime function," he says, explaining his decision not to make a bid. A few minutes later, he slips off his tuxedo jacket to cover the slim, bare shoulders of Shannon Elizabeth, his date and "American Pie II" co-star.

Brad Rowe, of NBC's "Leap of Faith," is chatting -- not about Julia Roberts, with whom he will appear in a movie later this year -- but about his wife, an interior designer who didn't feel up to the trip to Louisville because she's expecting the couple's first son in September.

Meanwhile, a steady stream of apparent bachelors make a rather obvious bid to be a consolation prize for Trista Rehn, the bombshell pediatric physical therapist who recently finished as runner-up in ABC's "The Bachelor."

Wow. Is this a Hollywood party or what?

Your perspective on the Hollywood glamour of the Mint Jubilee gala -- which was started six years ago by former University of Louisville football player-turned-actor Matt Battaglia and which lures about 1,000 paying guests by lining up visits of mostly young, up-and-coming stars -- depends a bit on how many Hollywood parties you've actually attended.

For Amanda Wiedemer, a Moore High School sophomore, the event could not have been more exciting. After all, she got to meet Backstreet Boys Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough, an opportunity so rare that friends pitched in to cover her $150 ticket for the after-dinner dance portion of the evening.

"It's pretty much all that I'd expect a Hollywood party to be," she said, still glowing from meeting Richardson and Dorough.

"Nervous doesn't even begin to describe it," she said. "I was shaking all over. I actually started to cry when they were walking away. It was great."

But for the stars themselves, the party, which organizers were hoping would clear at least $100,000 Friday night for cancer research, is appealing on a different level.

"It's a lot more down-home," said Rowe, comparing Louisville's party scene with Hollywood's.

"A party anywhere outside of Hollywood is nice," said Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who plays Meadow on HBO's "The Sopranos."

"It didn't feel like getting ready for an event," she said. "There was no pressure."

The stars seemed especially impressed by Louisville's famed Southern hospitality.

"They call me 'Sir,' " said the 25-year-old Pardue in amazement, then gestured to Cook, who is 22. "They call her 'Ma'am.' "
