- ![]() Date: May 05, 2002 Stars of every degree bet Derby is hottest party around By Heather Svokos, Le Datta Grimes and Laura Yuen - Herald-leader Staff Writers Just call him P. Derby. The artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, at last count known as P. Diddy, was the toast of yesterday's Derby. Sean "Puffy" Combs cheered his horse from atop a chair on Turf Terrace, flaunting old-school Puff Daddy style: white tux, diamond in ear and peach-and-gray-striped tie. While P. Diddy may have been the most buzzworthy star, the 128th Run for the Roses wasn't without its added celebrity voltage.
"I'm a Kentucky native, " Richardson said as he stood on Turf Terrace, puffing on a cigar. "And I'm having a great time. I'm proud of my state." The crowd was also scattered with Derby neophytes. Actress Kim Coles (Living Single), trackside with guests of the Grand Gala, was animal print-accessorized to the hilt, with matching dress, sunglasses and watchband. Aging shock rocker Alice Cooper did Derby in black-and-beige trousers, white shoes and gold medallion. "It's one of America's last pageants," Cooper said of the Derby. "I love tradition." Mingling on Millionaires' Row were stars from two of HBO's hottest shows: Jamie-Lynn Sigler, better known as Meadow on The Sopranos, and Mathew St. Patrick, who plays Officer Keith Charles on Six Feet Under. Nearby, actress Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That, Josie and the Pussycats) compared yesterday's crowd to Kentuckians she encountered when she was 12 and saw "a guy in a bear suit" at the state fair. "You'd be amazed at the similarities," she said. "It's the same enthusiasm. People just love where they are." Racing fanatic Jerry O'Connell (Scream 2, Stand by Me), spotted schmoozing with singing starlet Jessica Simpson, said the Derby "is the most exciting two minutes of sports all year long. When you think about the ratio of actual sporting event to partying, Louisville is the best." Nicholasville's own John Michael Montgomery, a frequent Derby guest, donning a monochromatic beige suit, cowboy hat and orange-tinted shades, voiced one lingering wish: "I've always wanted to go to the infield. Maybe one day I'll grow a beard and go."
