They've sold more than 55 million albums in the last three years. They are on another world tour, one that will take them across the globe - including a Feb. 18 date in the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. The Backstreet Boys are - for those of you older than 18 - Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, A.J. McLean and Kevin Richardson. Their current album, Black and Blue, released at the end of 2000, follows up 1999's Millennium, which sold millions of copies and garnered the band five 1999 Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. They routinely get slammed by music critics, who write them off as a packaged, market-and-demographically friendly group with little ability beyond pleasant vocals. And, rival boy band N'Sync has proven as adept at attracting the screams of teen-aged fans and selling massive numbers of albums using a similar formula - cute guys, heartfelt vocals and slick dance moves. So, when the new album came and the new tour was announced, there was even more pressure on the Boys. So far, they seem to be handling it just fine. Black and Blue has spent 11 weeks on Billboard Magazine's Billboard 200 chart, with 8 million copies sold to date. Their North American tour - which kicked off in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last month - is nearly sold out, and the band added 13 additional dates last year to accommodate eager fans. When the Backstreet Boys take the stage at the Alerus on Sunday, expect a lot of choreographed dance moves, powerful special effects and tons of stage props. A reviewer with the Miami Herald had this to say about the show when it came to Fort Lauderdale last month: What makes the BBoys far and away the best of the current pop acts, though, are its songs. Strip away the gimmickry, which sometimes overwhelmed, and tunes such as `I Want It That Way,' `Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely,' and the newer `More than That,' proved melodically sound and vocally tight. The BBoys are also good-natured, unfailingly energetic and, as sheer eye-candy and pop hooks go, you could do a lot worse than scoring a ticket for tonight's performance. Comment on this item.
