Date: Feb 10, 2001 Source: Toronto Sun Submitted By: Amber Boys outta this world Backstreet Boys light up the SkyDome for 55,000 fans By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun THE BACKSTREET BOYS SkyDome, Toronto Wednesday, February 7, 2001 TORONTO -- Over-the-top spectacle somehow seemed appropriate as the Backstreet Boys played their largest-ever Toronto concert at SkyDome last night. All the better to see one of the world's biggest boy bands -- Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter and A.J. McLean -- who became tiny, albeit animated and colourful figures in the distance as they performed on an enormous stage at one end of the large venue. "This is incredible," said Dorough, after the group was greeted by ear-piercing screams and a sea of twirling blue neon glow-in-the-dark sticks. "This is the biggest crowd that the Backstreet Boys have ever performed for in Toronto!" Added Richardson: "This is our fourth time here in the SkyDome and every time we come back, there's a little more of you!" Playing in front of 55,000 fans who had snapped up all the available tickets in just 75 minutes, the Boys first emerged amid fiery orange explosions that mimicked a planetary montage showing comets attacking Earth on a large oval screen behind them. The group then appeared to beam themselves up, or in as it were, as they rose up from beneath the stage on smoking white columns which elevated them high above the audience. Clad in long, shiny black leather duster coats, matching pants and either black or blue T-shirts -- their new album is called Black & Blue after all -- they stood at attention with their hands at their foreheads in a serious salute. Eventually, the Orlando, Fla., quintet lightened up as they were joined by 10 dancers for the opening song, Everyone, an uptempo number from the new album, which has sold 700,000 copies in Canada and 15 million worldwide. Got the crowd going Still, it was older songs like I Want It That Way, from their 1999 juggernaut, Millennium, their Grammy-nominated Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely, and Everybody (Backstreet's Back) that really got the crowd going. Also scoring points was a "behind-the-scenes" costume change, which saw the five group members disappear into a blue trunk on stage and eventually reappear on a smaller circular stage at the back of the venue. Following a medley of ballads, they returned back to the larger stage via a long catwalk singing the new song, The Answer To Our Life, as they knelt down and shook the hands of their fans. The Black & Blue world tour, which kicked off with a three-night stand in Ft. Lauderdale on Jan. 22, wraps up in North America on March 18. However, the group is expected to return for a second leg of stadium dates from July through September. In the meantime, Richardson and Dorough will appear on two "rock star" episodes of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, airing on Sunday and Wednesday nights. Richardson, who subbed at the last minute for Carter on the show, already spoiled the outcome during a MuchMusic appearance on Tuesday night saying neither Backstreet Boy made it into the hot seat to win the much-coveted cash.
