So I was hoping you could help with a question I have. My question regards the much-hyped CDs that are sold exclusively at McDonalds and Burger King restaurants for artists like 'N Sync, Britney Spears, and Backstreet Boys. Apparently, these albums are selling just as good as the french fries, so my question is, are they eligible for any of Billboard's charts or Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA) certification? I eagerly await your response.
Sincerely, Hi Jessica, Because the CDs that you listed are sold exclusively through certain fast food chains, we do not include them in our sales charts. A title must be available to any retailer to be eligible for our charts, and since those albums are only being sold through specific restaurants, they are not included in our charts. However, the RIAA could certify these sets, so long as they meet all of the RIAA's intricate certification requirements. For example, in March 1995, Garth Brooks' McDonalds-only piece, "The Garth Brooks Collection," was certified triple-platinum (3,000,000 units shipped). To learn more about the RIAA, and to read about exactly how they certify albums, visit its web site at www.riaa.com.
