Date: Sep 05, 2000 Teen Actor Gets Sizzling Taste of Hollywood North Written by Mike Drach, Toronto area freelance journalist There are 500+ teenage fans of The Backstreet Boys crowded around a commercial set at Jane & Wilson. This is the 3rd day of filming on a new Burger King commercial starring the hot teen pop group. The promotion marks the launch of a new limited addition CD single featuring music from their new album, along with a video. A week before this, local teen actor Shawn Korson was called to audition for this series of Burger King commercials showcasing The Backstreet Boys. The same day his agent called him excitedly with the news that he landed a role. Korson landed the role of a Burger King employee serving the Backstreet Boys while on their luxury tour bus. Part of a comedic string of commercials designed for the promotion. Out of numerous Toronto actors who auditioned for the commercial, he was one of five lucky actors to land a role of an employee in the various spots. Korson was excited of course, not knowing exactly what to expect on this job. He has appeared in numerous other commercials, yet this was by far thelargest. The set location was originally supposed to be top secret as to not cause swarms of fans getting in the way of production deadlines. However, word leaked out to several local radio and television stations and soon the set was surrounded. Now we bring you back to were we started this story. Arriving on set, Korson discovers the high security teams hired to protect the set and keep things in order. Certain passes are required to gain access to the set once your identity is verified. "I expected some fans to show up, but was surprised by the numbers and how quickly the word spread. " said Korson. After gaining access to the set, Korson is quickly whisked off to hair, make-up and wardrobe. Transforming him from your average witty teenager, into what looked like a Burger King employee of the month. Several commercials for the campaign were being shot in that day and Korson's scene was last. While waiting, Korson found time to talk to the fans surrounding the Burger King location. "The fans are very loyal. Some baking under the scorching sun from early morning until night. All just to catch a glimpse of their favorite Backstreet Boy." said Korson. Among the 500+ teens, Korson found he was recognized by some from a character he played a while back named "Stanley" in two episodes of CBC's "JONOVISON", with host Jonothan Torrens. "It was interesting to be remembered for that. To my surprise, I was asked by about 50 people for autographs as well as pictures with their daughters and cousins from out of town, it was wild!" said Korson. Finally it was Korson's scene, the luxury tour bus was brought in. "They called me in first to the tour bus set before the Backstreet Boys. From the inside it looked like a luxury casino. said Korson "A queen size bed lined with a string of lights, a mirror on the ceiling above the bed, and to top it off, a fully equipped home theater surround sound system built right into the bedroom. All that was missing was a couple of slot machines and a mini-bar." Finally after the set was prepared, the Backstreet Boys, consisting of Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, A.J. Mclean, Howie Dorough, and Nick Carter were brought in. "It was great to hang out with them, being the celebrities they are. While hundreds of fans are dying to catch a mere glimpse of them, I was mingling with them as a fellow actor. Not certain what to expect, I found them to be very easy going, cracking jokes amongst each other and very friendly. " says Korson. "The funniest thing I heard when they boarded the tour bus, was one of the boys exclaiming that they should be touring in a bus that slick." These Burger King commercials can be seen currently playing across Canada and the U.S. and will possibly be aired internationally as well. Korson states , "To me, it's not about achieving glamour and fans. It's about the art of acting, showing your art through mass media. If people become fans of your work because they feel you have talent, that is what counts. When it gets to the point where you only care about money and glamour, you need to either have your head deflated or get out of the biz." Korson is pursuing acting full time, has made career goals for himself and is also studying screen writing. Having been in the industry for over 3 years now, he is well on his way. He explains that at this point in his career he would like to focus on film and television roles. Recently he auditioned for a role in a major feature film shooting in Los Angeles starring three well known celebrities coming out next year. "All you can do is show them your best, let your personality show through your acting and hope something comes of it. If not, forget about it because it will only bring you down. There will always be films being made, and other chances."says Korson. You can visit Shawn Korson's website where you can find up to date information on his career, pictures of Shawn and behind the scenes photos taken while on set of the Burger King commercial. --- Shawn is hoping the media will pick up on this story.
