Fan hurt at Backstreet Boys show sues for pain in the neck

Date: Aug 31, 2000 Source: The Ottawa Citizen Submitted By: EDMONTON -An Edmonton judge wil be asked to rule on something most parents know instinctively -whether attending Backstreet Boys concerts can be a pain in the neck. Alissa Foster says she was badly injured two years ago when she slipped on a plastic tarp during a concert by the megagroup at Commonwealth Stadium. Now she's suing the city, Toronto based promoter HOB Concerts Canada Ltd. and two unknown wokers for $700,000 in damages. Among other injuries, the then-16-year-old fan contends she suffered pain and loss of motion in her neck and back, post concussion syndrome, dizziness, a closed-head injury and finger numbness. "Prior to the accident, she enjoyed a full and rewarding social and family life," says a recently filed statement of claim. "As a result of the injuries suffered in the accident, she has been unable to complete all of her usual household tasks or enjoy her recreational life to the extent she did before." Lawyer Craig MacKay said yesterday his client fell backward on the tarp and hit her head on the wooden beam underneath, knocking her unconcious. She was taken by ambulance for treatment at the Grey Nuns Hospital, he said. The five Backstreet Boys-A.J., Nick, Kevin, howie and Brian- aren't part of the lawsuit. The American band has become the idol of teenagers across the continent with such hits as Larger than Life and Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely. Comment on this item.
