- ![]() Date: Jun 28, 2000 Jive Records' newest pop protégé, Don Philip, is quite grateful that labelmate and Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell co-wrote a song for Philip's self-titled debut album (allstar, Aug. 5, 1999) and says he wouldn't mind returning the favor himself. "I've been writing for a lot of different artists, friends of mine," Philip says, declining to name them for fear of jinxing the deals. "If I had the chance, I'd love to write something for [Backstreet Boys]." Littrell co-wrote the song "How Did I Ever" for Philip with producer/songwriter Eric Foster White. "I think he was originally writing it for [Backstreet Boys' own] album, but I got it first," says Philip. "I loved the song and went in and recorded it, gave it my own flavor, and he approved the vocals. It's a mid-tempo song. It sounds kind of like a Backstreet Boys song, actually. It's the single in Japan right now and it has the potential to be the second single here." '80s chart-topping songwriter Richard Marx also contributed a song, the ballad "Tenderly," to Philip's debut. "I stayed at his house in Chicago for a week and we worked to give the song my vibe," says Philip, who admits to being a huge fan of the man behind the No. 1 singles "Right Here Waiting" and "Hold On to the Nights." "He wrote and produced it and actually did background vocals for me, too." Marx, whose last album was the adult contemporary-targeted Flesh & Bone in 1997, has been keeping himself busy writing for and producing other artists, including several teen acts. He penned "This I Promise You" for 'NSync's record-breaking No Strings Attached, co-wrote for ex-No Authority member Josh Keaton's upcoming solo debut, collaborated with 98 Degree's Nick Lachey on a track for their next album, and is currently working with LeAnn Rimes on her latest project. Philip will join pop hopefuls Mikaila, A*Teens, BBMak, Innosense, No Authority, 5ive, Nobody's Angel, and C-Note as an opening act on labelmate Britney Spears' summer tour for August and September dates (allstar, June 6). Philip's first U.S. single, "You Make Me Love You ... More," hits record stores July 15. His self-titled album will be released Aug. 22. -- Marisa Laudadio
