I don’t think they can sing, and they’re ugly."-Julie Flannery, Freshman(Nstink lover) "They have chicks hanging all over them, and every guy wants to be them, but won’t admit it."-Sam Beasley, Senior ‘Backstreet’s Back’ The Backstreet Boys are definitely "Larger than Life"in the music industry today. They are starting out this new Millennium on top of the world, and they have proven to the public that when it comes to entertainment, we "want it that way". As forerunners in the teen-pop era that is so dominant in music today, the Backstreet Boys are fulfilling that role, now, more than ever. Three years after their U.S. debut, they are still on top. "I think the Backstreet Boys are one of the best pop boy-bands ever. They have the most talent and more appeal than any other boy-band today." Said WLBC disc jockey Adam Grubb. Just how BIG are they? Well, the Orlando-based quintet have two of the biggest albums in recent history. According to Billboard magaizine, their 1997 self-titled debut album has sold over 12 million copies, making it the 10 th best selling album of the 90s. The Backstreet Boys’ second effort, Millennium, began setting records its first week out, selling 1.2 million copies, the most ever in a single week. Its stamina has kept it in the top 1o of the Billboard 200 for 32 weeks, spending 10 of those weeks at number one, making it the best selling album of 1999. Millennium has sold a total of 11 million copies in less than a year, just six million short of the best selling album of the 1990s, Whitney Houston’s "The Bodyguard" which has been out since 1992. On February 23, the Backstreet Boys will see if they truly stack up to the cream of the crop of music at the 42 nd Annual Grammy Awards. The group was nominated for a total of 5 awards including Record of the Year "I Want it That Way" and Album of the Year for Millennium. The award show will air on CBS on February 23 at 8 pm. The Backstreet Boys are having just as much success locally as they are on a national level. "They were in the People’s Choice Countdown(the top 10 requested songs of each day) for more that 4 straight months, at least one month of that at number one," Grubb said about the group’s huge hit, "I Want it That Way". There is no doubt that local hype has been increased because of the group’s stop at Conseco Fieldhouse during their Millennium tour. The Backstreet Boys will be in Indianapolis for two completely sold-out shows on March 10 and 11. There were 36, 308 ticket available for each show. According to Karma, the first show sold out in just five minutes-121 tickets per second. The second show took slightly longer, 15 minutes, to sell out. A few Central students were lucky enough to get their hands on tickets for one of the shows. "I stood in line for four hours for tickets." Said junior Kylie Duncan. Along with the success of their own albums and songs, crdit could be given to the Backstreet Boys for some of the success of teen-pop artists who came later, such as NSYNC and Christina Aguilera. "The Backstreet Boys have probably had the biggest influence on the music industry during the 1990s. In the 80s, New Kids On The Block paved the way for other pop stars, and the Backstreet Boys did the same thing for the 90s," Said Grubb. So is there really any difference between the groups, or are the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and 98* all the same? "I think NSYNC appeals to younger kids more than Backstreet Boys even tough they target the same audience. They have a younger sound than the Backstreet Boys, "Says Junior Sara Robertson. "I don’t think there’s a difference. It’s just the same pop, boy-band stuff." Said junior Gwen Doyle. "When it comes to NSYNC, I’m the number one fan. I can’t see myself ever disliking them. I’m a fanatic, "said senior Kate Powers, who has 287 posters and pictures of NSYNC in her room. "The Backstreet Boys are my favorite group in the whole world, " said Duncan, "Until my sister got home, two of my walls were completely covered with posters and pictures of them." Whether a devoted fan of the Backstreet Boys, like Duncan, or not, how many people can seriously say they’ve never been to a dance or party where "Everybody(Backstreet’s Back)" has been played? How many people can honestly say they don’t know the chorus to "I Want It That Way?" That, right there, is proof that the Backstreet Boys definitely are "larger than Life." Comment on this item.
