Here is a letter, article, and song I wrote:Dear AJ, I have so many words that I need to type that everything in my mind is a jumbled mess. I don’t really know if you will ever read this, but I wanted to try anyway. First off, you mean the world to so many people. We are all praying for your health and recovery. You see, most fans don’t truly know you. But, you’re real. You’re someone we can look up to, because of your numerous accomplishments and your amazing qualities. That’s why this event has touched so many of us. It has helped us to understand a little bit of life and also to understand that if we ever have a friend in this situation, we need to help them. You mean so much to me. I went to my first concert, a Backstreet Boys concert, on July 9, 1998. I went in, not knowing your names, and I came out obsessed. I didn’t just like you because you were cute (though you really truly are handsome) or because it was the “cool” thing, but because you touched my life. You gave me a passion, a thirst for music. These days, I live music. You are now not only my idols, but my inspiration. My dream is to become a singer/performer. When I listen to you singing, my strongest desire is to make someone else feel the way I do. I admire your positive attributes and relate to some of the negative ones. Though I may never meet you, you have changed my life forever, starting with making me truly love something to helping me choose a career path. I want you to know how much you have done for us, the fans. You have affected so many lives, in so many ways. We feel like we understand you and that you are there for us. You are an amazing role model to people that love life, but are normal. We all have problems, yet you’ve helped so many people overcome theirs. We are praying that maybe something we do can help you in turn. When I first heard this news, I wondered, “Why? Why did this happen to someone so incredible, someone who has saved so many lives and done so much good.” It hurts inside, to see the people we cherish all torn up like this. But, by stepping forward and getting help, you have encouraged people to conquer their problems and to get help. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for everything that you have done for me. You as well as Nick, Brian, Kevin, and Howie will always be in my prayers. Keep The Backstreet Pride Alive! Best wishes for your health and recovery. My Article:
My stomach twisted into a knot. Tears burst from my eyes. The room began to melt away as the words sunk in. A.J. McLean, of the Backstreet Boys, had checked into rehabilitation, for anxiety, depression, and excessive consumption of alcohol. This event has affected so many people in so many ways. Every time I think about it, I burst into tears. I really felt the need to get the words out, and to share my thoughts with all of those praying for A.J. The first thing I thought was, “Why? Why does this have to happen?” The way I see it is A.J. is an amazing person. He is human, though. He does have his needs and wants, yet never has he let that stop him from being an incredible person. He has touched so many lives, in so many ways, that it was unbelievable that it came to this. I asked, “Is this what life is? You give so much and you do much for so many people and this is what you get in return?” You see, the reason this has affected so many people is because of what it signifies. One, it proves that A.J. is human. He has problems. So many people are able to relate to his current problem, that it hurts us to think about it. This has affected everyone because of what he means to them. I’ve heard numerous stories about girls that were on the verge of killing themselves, but one thing stopped them. The Backstreet Boys. A.J., Nick, Brian, Kevin, and Howie were there for us, in our ups and downs. When we needed something to turn to, they were there,or when we wanted to celebrate, they were there. And now, to see one of them going through sheer misery and the other four so torn up, we feel a great deal of pain. What can we do for them? We feel hurt that A.J.’s life was in such a situation and we couldn’t do anything about it. But, mostly, we feel sorrow. Sorrow that someone that had touched so many people’s lives has to experience this. Sorrow that someone that has given the world to us is now at a terrible time in life. Sorrow that four men have to feel helpless as they watch one of their best friends struggle through the situation. Sorrow. As in every situation, there is a brighter side. A.J. is one of the biggest celebrity role models. His courage to stand up and get help and his bravery to take charge of his life has encouraged many people. People are beginning to understand that alone, they can’t solve their problems. Those with friends affected by depression or alcoholism now understand their role and how to help. By BSB coming straight out, about the situation, people realize that depression and alcoholism are not things to hide, but things to deal with. And to every person that says, “Oh well, he’s just another one of the many people with depression, what’s the big deal?”, this is the big deal: He has the power to not only make others aware of problems, but has the power to inspire others to get help. His position can teach so many people a great deal. Not only are those with problems similar to A.J. changing, but much of his fan base is as well. His case has made many aware of what depression and alcoholism are and what needs to be done. It amazes me how I saw so many fans researching depression, symptoms, etc., now that they have seen what it has done. The awareness level of teenagers, on this issue, is so much higher, as we finally realize its tremendous effects. Times like this continue to astound me. As we all feel deep sadness pitted in our stomachs, we realize that we are not alone. In this time of unhappiness, fans are pulling together, to unite for a common cause. BSB fans’ “arch enemy” (only stereotypically), *N Sync fans are turning up, not to criticize us, but to support us. People all across America, fans or not, are joining together. As a group, we want the best for A.J., as well as Nick, Brian, Kevin, and Howie. As a group, we want to help those with depression and alcoholism. But, most of all, we want to show our support. Fans are doing everything in their power to make things better. Whether it is voting 20 times for MTV’s TRL or joining in Kiwibox.com’s Million Teens Supporting AJ, fans are out there, trying to comfort each other, support BSB, and make the best of the situation. What really bothers me is those that say, “It’s not a big deal, its not like he’s dead,” or “So what? He did it to himself.” What you have to understand is that depression is like a disease. Something led him to this and now it is out of his control. Depression is a serious issue. In many cases, it has led to suicide among other things. Alcoholism is also very damaging to anyone. The liver can only properly break down half an ounce of alcohol per half hour. All the excess remains in the body, damaging important body parts and functions. If you or someone you know has any of these problems, please seek help. On behalf of many of the fans, I’d like to say that we all support A.J. and the other four boys in what they are doing and how they are handling the situation. We stand by them all the way. We’d like to send best wishes to A.J. McLean for good health and recovery. My Song: You stood looking in the mirror, Tear pouring down your face. What you saw wasn't good enough, Wasn't to your taste. Closed your eyes and turned away, And sucked the pain back in. Put a mask on your face, And hid it all within. Chorus: You're crying from the inside, And can't let it go. You're falling apart, But you won't let it show. You're living with the pain, And you're hurting yourself. You're living with the pain, And that's all that's left. Day by day you sink deeper, In this pool of despair. To you, nothing matters, Because life isn't fair. Slowly you kill all that you've got, Cuz the way you see it, you ain't got a lot. Chorus Its tearing you up, Its breaking you down. You deal with the pain, It knows no bounds. You bottle it up, And close it inside. Chorus You're living with the pain, And that's all thats left. § Mayuri §

Hey AJ, I really dont have that much to say that hasnt already been said, but i just wanted to tell you a lil' about me and how you inspire me and how I admire you. First of all I am a 15 year old guy from a fairly small town in California below Redding. I came to both of your Oakland concerts and had an absoloutly encredible time. What was most impressive to me is how much energy and soul all of you guys put into your shows, but inperticular you and Nick, you guys put everything into the show and looked like you were having an awesome time, that was really awsome to see. I dont know if u would remember but i gave u guys a basketball that you guys played around with during Shape Of My Heart that was really an awesome part of the show for me. Anyways you seem like a very strong person and i know you will get through this tough time ur having and you also have a great bounch of guys arond you that could be a lot of help to you. My mom and I have not missed a show in the last 2 years and are comeing to see you on Augest 13th in San Jose. I would really love to meet you guys and most of all just hang out with u guys for like a day and play some basketball, but i know that probly wont happen. Well most of all i just hope you get better and get happy. See ya on Aug. 13th. Blake Danielson, Chico CA. P.S. If u guys are in San Jose, and wanna play some basketball call me up, (530) 345-8457, cause u know i had to try>:)
